Also in the 35mm half-frame field, but really stretching the "subminiature" description, the Univex Mercury (at left) gave us the world's first hot shoe for flash in 1938. It had a very accurate rotary focal plane shutter with speeds from 1/20 to 1/1000 (one model even went to 1/1500) and a modest series of interchangeable lenses and accessories, and it used standard 35mm film on a special proprietary spool. After the war it was replaced by the Mercury II (at right), which used standard 35mm cartridges but grew substantially larger in the bargain.
